About Ladakh Geography

Being the highest plateau (with most of it being over 3000m) of Indian state Kashmir, Ladakh is bounded by the great Himalayan and Karakoram mountain ranges along with the Indus River Valley.

The mountain ranges were created over a time phase of 45 million years by the folding of the Indian plates into more stationery Eurasian plates with the drift still taking place. With the region surrounded by a number of valleys and glaciers, Ladakh can be defined as a kaleidoscope of beautiful sceneries.

Indus River can be defined as the backbone of Ladakh as most of the major historical and modern towns are located close to it. In Hindu religion and culture, the part of the river flowing through Ladakh region is highly venerated.

Heavy snowfall is experienced by the regions in the north line of Himalayas namely- Dras, Zangskar and the Suru Valley. Because of this reason they remain virtually cut off from the rest of the country for several months. The summers are short and offer a pleasant and dry weather with the temperature ranging from -3 to 30 degrees in summer and from -20 to 15 degrees in winters.

The best time to visit Ladakh is during summers that are from June to September as the region becomes warm with bright days and pleasant nights.
